Have you always wondered what a GPS was? Do you have one, but don't know how to use it? Well then you've come to the right place!
The GPS (Global Positioning System) is a powerful navigational tool that many outdoor enthusiasts use for helping them get around in remote areas. GPS units are inexpensive, yet the system is very powerful in what it can do. Using satellites that transmit radio signals to the earth, it can help to tell you where you are, where you've been, and where you are going. It is a great tool to use with a map and compass to help take the mystery out of navigating in the outdoors.
One of the newest outdoor sports uses the GPS as a treasure hunting tool. This activity is known as Geocaching. Using the internet as a way to locate hidden treasures or "caches", you enter the coordinates of this cache into your GPS and then find the hiding spot of the geocache. This sport is worldwide, with over over 6,000 geocaches located in Ontario alone. If you have ever done a scavenger hunt, this game will be of interest to you. It is quite addicting, and is a great way to add adventure to your trips to the outdoors. It can be a great activity for young and old alike.
For those of you who would like to learn more about the basics of GPS and find out about the adventures of Geocaching, we offer the Basic Course. For those who want to learn more about using the GPS with a topographic map and compass, and want GPS Certification, we offer an Advanced Course.
No matter what your skill level, you will be able to enjoy your GPS to navigate back to your favourite fishing spot, or to find that next geocache in your outdoor adventures. GPS's are provided for your use during the course, so even if you don't own one yet, you can still learn what they do, and see if this would be right for you, before you buy one.
